I will start off by saying that I’m not the most focused person you’ll know. And I’m starting to suspect that I might have borderline ADHD. So if this have worked for me, it might be useful for you too!
“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Your goal is your desired outcome. Your system is the collection of daily habits that will get you there.” – James Clear
Have you read Atomic Habits by James Clear? If you’re someone who is trying to be more “disciplined” in your life or consistent in your habits or even wanting to teach your kids that, this is a great book to start.
My hugest takeaway is when he said that the most consistent people are not the most disciplined.
[Inserts gasp by me] “What do you mean?!”
It’s from his book that I learnt to set up systems in my day so that I will complete what I’ve set up to do rather than trying to rely on my willpower to get things done.
For e.g., I’m now on Focusmate, a virtual working platform where I am randomly matched to someone online to work together for 50 minutes. This has done wonders to my productivity. Since we talk about what we need to do at the start of the session and then talk about what we’ve done at the end of the session, it keeps me accountable.
I’m also practicing breaking down my work into small chunks to complete per day. My work sessions are 50 minutes long and I tend to work through 3 of these for each workday. A chunk for me will take between 30 to 50 minutes.
And here’s the Young Living products that I’ve found helpful for focus too:
- Believe – This is a beautiful blend by Young Living and it helps one to believe in oneself and take the actions for it. I use this a lot when I’ve a lotta self doubt.
- Ningxia Nitro – Super helpful when I’m tired or needing to do a lot of brain work. The energy that comes into my brain is a steady stream and more importantly, it does not lead to a sugar crash afterwards, uulike most energy drinks.
- Brain Power – This can be a pricey blend but it’s really good for bringing your brain to its highest level and potential. More budget friendly versions could be Rosemary and Grapefruit but I love Brain Power cos I’ve seen how it has gotten my mom to stay alert and not foggy after her stroke and helped my daughter through her long hours of revision for her exams.
