The most commonly known is to use it as an insect repellent. It contains citronella which is known for its ability to repel mosquitoes and other insects.
Tip for insect repellent: Dilute a few drops with a carrier oil (as Lemongrass essential oil can be hot) and apply it to your skin before heading outdoors.
The refreshing and invigorating aroma of lemongrass essential oil can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. It can also improve mood and help alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression. Diffuse it in your home or workplace to create a calming atmosphere. You can also use it in massage or diluted with a carrier oil to provide relief from muscle and joint discomfort. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe sore muscles and improve circulation.
You can also use Lemongrass Essential Oil as a natural deodorizer and air freshener by adding a few drops to a diffuser or mix it with water in a spray bottle to freshen up your home or shoes. You could also add a few drops of lemongrass essential oil to a pot of simmering water on the stove or use an essential oil diffuser. The steam or diffuser will release the refreshing scent into the air. Lastly, here’s an interesting and lesser-known use of Lemongrass Essential Oil in the creation of homemade cleaning products. As lemongrass oil possesses natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, this makes it a great addition to DIY cleaning solutions.
Here’s how you can use it:
- All-Purpose Cleaner: You can make a simple all-purpose cleaning spray by mixing lemongrass essential oil with water and white vinegar. In a spray bottle, combine water and white vinegar in equal parts (e.g., 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of vinegar) and then add 10-15 drops of lemongrass essential oil. Shake well before each use. This mixture can be used to clean countertops, glass, and various surfaces in your home.
- Floor Cleaner: To clean and refresh your floors, add a few drops of lemongrass essential oil to a bucket of warm water and a mild floor cleaner. The pleasant aroma of lemongrass will leave your space smelling fresh.
- Mold and Mildew Remover: Lemongrass essential oil’s antifungal properties make it a valuable addition to mold and mildew cleaning solutions. Mix a few drops of lemongrass oil with water and a small amount of white vinegar, and use it to clean areas prone to mold or mildew.
- Stain Remover: Lemongrass essential oil can be used to help remove stubborn stains. Mix a few drops with a bit of baking soda to create a paste, apply it to the stain, and then gently scrub. It can be effective for stain removal on various surfaces, including fabrics and carpets.
- Refrigerator Deodorizer: Place a cotton ball or a small container with a few drops of lemongrass oil in your refrigerator to naturally freshen the air and eliminate odors. I would suggest just 1 to 2 drops as the scent can be really strong.
Claryn’s tip: I personally use it for my laundry. I’ll Add 2 drops of Lemongrass Essential Oil, 1 tablespoon baking soda and Thieves Laundry Soap into the soap tray. I’ll also add another 2 to 4 drops of essential oil into the softener compartment. This helps to freshen up my load of laundry and acts as a natural air freshener at home when I hang up the laundry for drying.
Using lemongrass essential oil in your DIY cleaning products not only adds a pleasant scent to your home but also offers a more natural and chemical-free way to maintain a clean and fresh living environment.
Note: For the use of cleaning, always do a spot test on surfaces to ensure it won’t cause any damage or discoloration.
